First Class Reaching New Heights On Asian, Middle Eastern Carriers

Airlines love trying to get one up on each other, and these days, the “one up” game of late has been focusing on first class travel. Caviar, Givenchy pyjamas, concierge service at airports . . . airlines are coming up with more and more ways to entice travelers to fork out first class prices to be treated like royalty.

According to the latest Skytrax survey, nobody’s doing it better than Qatar Airways. This 5-star airline offers first class passengers a range of indulgences including a completely separate—no “lower class” travelers allowed—and utterly luxurious, marble-floored terminal at Doha airport; chauffeur services—in BMWs no less—right to the planes at Doha airport; seats that have back massage features, and that convert to flat beds complete with white linen and feather duvets; and 10-course meals that include all the trimmings from caviar to champagne.

First class travelers on Emirates Airlines retreat into actual mini-suites onboard the aircraft, complete with their own private bathrooms, spa showers, mini-bars, and 23-inch televisions. Dining is on-demand, from a lengthy a la carte menu, and of course with linen table service. Passengers can mingle in the exclusive first class lounge.

Singapore Airlines offers its first class travelers a similar level of luxury, in its “Sky Suites.” These luxurious spaces can be transformed into cozy bedrooms—with what the airline bills as “the largest beds in the sky”—or into mini-restaurants where passengers can dine on-demand with fellow first classers on culinary delights created by renowned chefs. Designer pyjamas, Ferragamo toiletry kits, elegant stationery . . . whatever you could possibly need or want is there for you.

When you’re swaddled in luxury like this, the hours will simply “fly”—perhaps too quickly.
