Aizawl (2001 population 339,812) is the largest city in the state of Mizoram,
and is also the capital. Aizawl is situated between the Tlawng
River Valley, and the Tuirial River Valley. This city is home to
important government offices, the State Assembly, and is considered on the most
important cities in the Northeastern region. The city sits upon
high hills, giving birth to twisting streams, deep gorges, and naturally
beautiful flora and fauna. Much of Aizawl is inhabited by the Mizo
tribal people, and it is these people that give Aizawl it's vibrant and unique
cultural characteristics. Aizawl, meaning "home of the
highlanders", is located at an altitude of 3500 feet above the sea level.
The Mizo people have inhabited this region for hundreds of years, and
many of their earliest artifacts-- such as weaponry, instruments, many rare
objects, woodcrafts and utensils-- are displayed at the Mizoram State
Museum.
Over time Aizawl has become one of the best travel destinations
in India. People come to its scenic landscape, its memorials and
its monuments dedicated to folklore and legend. This area is used
thoroughly as a political and religious centre to the Mizo people.
See the bustling streets of Bara Bazar-- a great place to find
everything from clothes, to accessories, to indigenous crafts, to household and
commercial goods. Many Mizo women work in the markets, wearing
their colorful and traditional puanchei. At the Luangmual
Handicrafts Centre, travelers can buy many hand-made goods: jewelry, clothing,
and especially khumbeu-- a ceremonial bamboo hat. There
are also many outdoor attractions in Aizawl, including the Mini Zoo, Durtlang
Hills, the Pukzing Caves, and Rungdil Lake. There are many sites
to see, lots of delicious cuisines to try, and lots of cultural activities to
participate in. Don't miss your chance to visit this interesting
Indian destination!
