Ajaccio, France is located on
the south side of the island of Corsica, approximately 390km southeat of
Marseille. This sunny and windy part of
the island is a world renowned wine region where the dominating grape variety
is the Sciacarellu
for red wine and rosé. Ajaccio is a
commune, but unlike other communes in France, it contains six cantons as
opposed to just one. Ajaccio is a
popular destination for the French as well as other Europeans due to its year
round moderate climate.
Ajaccio is
most famous for being the birth place of Napolean Bonaparte, who was born in this town
in 1769. The Bonapartes owned a modest
four-story home in town which has now been converted to a museum that is
Ajaccio’s most popular tourist attraction.
Napoleon’s association with the Ajaccio are emphasized by street names
and statues throughout the town.
But if beaches and vineyards are not your cup of tea, be
sure to also visit the other historical sites Ajaccio has to offer, including the
Citadel, the Citadel jetty, and the Ajaccio Cathedral.
