Alamosa is located in south central Colorado in the majestic
San Luis Valley, just north of the state of New Mexico. The city takes its name from the Alamosa
River & has a population of 8,679. (2007)

tourism. The crops harvested here
include potatoes, carrots, spinach, barley, lettuce & hay.
Being located in the
lush San Luis Valley offers many opportunities for the visitor to this
city. Great Sand Dunes National Park is
not to be missed as a natural wonder with some dunes reaching heights of 700
feet. In the United States, these are
the largest inland dunes. San Luis Lakes is a recreation area & state park
for fishing, hunting & water sports. ‘World-class’ birdwatching of bald
eagles, water birds, sandhill cranes & shore birds nesting or migrating is
a popular visitor’s delight. The Zapata Falls recreational area features an
incredible waterfall carved into a narrow canyon. Enjoy a picnic in the area & hike the
trails to the waterfall or visit the nearby century old Medano-Zapata ranch
home to herds of bison.
The San Luis Valley Alligator Farm has Two Mile Creek Wildlife
Habitat which is over 80 acres with alligators and fishing for bass &
catfish.
The San Luis Valley Regional Airport is conveniently located
3 kms south of Alamosa.
