Settled in pre-historical times, Alghero (2004 population 40, 257) is a port city located on the Mediterranean Sea.  Born around a port Alghero was founded in approximately 1102 by the Genoese Doria family.  This family ruled Alghero for centuries, and was much later captured by the Aragonese.  Catalan colonists arrived in the 16th century, contributing to much of its character today.

Located on Sardinia’s Northwest coast, Alghero is a city accustomed to many years of tourism yet retains much of its historical charm.  Visit the old town center (reminiscent of the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, with a Tuscan twist) on the coast, which holds a network of narrow cobblestone lanes.  Known for its seafood, you can also enjoy a romantic dinner on the oceanfront at one of Alghero's many reputable restaurants. From the starting of November until mid December, catch the Sardinian celebration of Settimana del Novella, which is a celebration of the local red wine.  Many restaurants offer a unique menu at this time.  If you're looking for nightlife, many bars and cafes can be found not far from the ocean to catch the cool breeze of the Mediterranean Sea.  For an unique piece of the culture, visit local craft shops selling handmade pottery and fine jewelry made from native Red Corals.
