Flights to Ancona
Ancona is a beautiful seaport city located in Marche, a region in central Italy (2007 population 101, 210). The capital of the region, Ancona is situated on the Adriatic Sea and is 210km northeast of Rome. Founded around 390BC, Ancona is a Greek modification of the word "elbow", for its shape. Julius Caesar himself captured Ancona immediately after his departure into the Rubicon. Ancona was considered to be of great importance and value because of its impressive harbor. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Ancona was attacked by various parties. Under brief French rule, Ancona eventually was taken by the Carolingian conquest of northern Italy.
Frequently throughout history, Ancona appears as an important fortress. Rich with tales of historical battles, there is much to see in Ancona. Enjoy a breathtaking sea view from the 11th century Duomo, or contemplate paintings by the famous Titian at the Pinacoteca Communale art gallery in the historic palazzo. Visit Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Marche and see some of the world's most impressive Roman bronze statues.
This hidden getaway is a little-known part of Italy, but offers seclusion and has much to recommend. Only a short ride away, indulge in sunny beaches all along the coastline, or watch the sunset fall on the Appenine Mountains. Ancona truly can not be witnessed without visiting the Arch of Trajan, a marble archway constructed in 114/115 AD to honor the Emperor who made the harbor. Built as an entrance to the causeway atop the harbor, it is considered one of the finest Roman monuments in Marche.
