Angers is a stunning town located in the
Anjou region of northwestern France, approximately 300 km south-west of Paris, on the river
Maine. Angers was once known as ‘Black
Angers’ from the dark coloured slate and stone that is quarried here but in
fact, Angers is a very pretty town, full of friendly prople and a lively
atmosphere. In fact, Angers calls itself
the ‘most flowered city in Europe’ as this area of France is famous for its
flourishing nurseries and market gardens.
Although there is
much to see, the overriding reason to visit Angers is to see two magnificant
tapestries that are housed here. On
display in the tapestry museum at the Castle of Angers are the amazing fourteenth-century Apocalype (140 metres long) and the twentieth-century Chant du Monde.
Aside from tapestries, there are several
other sites in Angers that are worth a visit.
Foremost amongst these are the spectacular Cathedral of Saint Maurice
(12th-13th century), with its beautiful twin spires and also the massive Castle
of Angers (early 13th century), with its moat and soaring towers.
Angers
is also home to several museums that compete on a national level. Specifically, the Musée des Beaux Arts (Art &
Sculpture), the Musée Pincé (Classical, Egyptian, Etruscan, Japanese and
Chinese art) and Galerie David d'Angers (sculpture).
