Flights to Asahikawa
Located in the Kamikawa Sub prefecture,
Asahikawa (2008 population 355,851) is the capital of the second-largest city
in Hokkaido. The city of Asahikawa is
well-known for the Asahiyama Zoo, and the Asahikawa Ramen. The Ainu people called the Asahi River Chiu
Pet, meaning 'the river of waves'.The Ainu are an indigenous ethnic group to Hokkaido, with approximately
150,000 Ainu still inhabiting the region today. There may be more, and the number is uncertain, since many parents of
Ainu children kept their ancestry private to protect their children of Japanese
social problems.Large settlements of
Japanese newcomers gradually spread into Ainu territory, and as the Japanese
moved north and took control over Ainu lands, the Ainu often gave up without
much resistance.Occasional wars in
1457, 1669, and 1789 took place, but the Ainu were mostly defeated. In August of 1922, Asahikawa was officially founded
as Asahikawa City.Influential in
industry and commerce, Asahikawa thrived as a military city prior to World War
II.
Visit Asahikawa during the Asahikawa Winter Festival in February, which
takes place on the banks of the Ishikari River, making use of Asahikawa's cold
climate and snow.Due to Asahikawa's
climate and perfect location surrounded by mountains, there are some beautiful
ski resorts on the outskirts of the city. This city is home to Japan's most famous zoo-- the Asahiyama Zoo.In 2004, over 320,000 people visited the
zoo-- one of the highest numbers in all the zoos of Japan. The zoo was inaugurated in 1967, boasting 75
species of animals-- including 200 common carp. The zoo has undertaken construction for creative interactive animal-viewing.It welcomes visitors to watch birds flying
freely in a massive cage, recently installed a Polar Bear Aquatic Park, a
walk-through Penguin Aquarium, Orangutan Trapeze, and a Seal Aquarium-- which
allows you to view the seals swimming vertically through its cylindrical water
tank.Other interesting attractions
include the Asahikawa Youth Science Museum, the Asahibashi Bridge, and
the Otokoyama Sake Brewing Museum.
