Flights to Ayr
Being named after the
Scottish birthplace of Sir Thomas McIllwraith, Ayr became a town in 1882. This
quaint farming community situated on the delta of the Burdekin River has a
small population of 8,616 as of 2006. Sharing northeast Queensland with many other
fishing villages, Ayr is one of the most important areas for fishing and
farming in all of Australia. Like it's founding forefathers had envisioned it
to be, the town became properous due to the amount of natural resources. With
all of it's aquifers and creeks, the region has no lack of water to supply it's
fields and townspeople.
The area has a
spectacular amount of bird species throughout it's fields and wetland's. To get
an astonishing view of the area head up to Mount Kelly, which is only 5 minutes
away. If you're a nature lover and enjoy walking or hiking, take in the regions
unspoilt sandy beaches, rivers, and small creeks. With Ayr being a town in the
state of Queensland, people seem to have the classic east coast laid back
lifestyle. With everything in Australia somehow linked to the beaches and
water, you'll be sure to see people beach fishing, or doing some kind of
activity in the ocean. A slight difference with the beaches up north is it's
wind patterns, which is why Ayr has adopted windsurfing to be more of a pastime
than surfing. But for all of the land locked people touring through the area,
there is an abundance of restaurants and shopping malls to check out before you
leave the town's limits. Leaving the limits of town brings you to one of Queenslands
prized possessions: the Ayr Golf Course, which is a common place for men to
come and discuss business over a relaxing game of golf.
