Flights to Bolzano
Settled in 15 BC by the Romans, Bolzano (2008 population 101,063) is a city in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy the capital of the province of Bolzano-Bozen. Bolzano has been a trading point from it's beginning, and was believed to be a thriving market town. Located between the two major cities of Venice and Augsburg, Bolzano became a place for traders to flock four times a year to. The city quickly became a crossing point for both Germans and Italians. Originally part of the Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol, under Benito Mussolini it became more Italianized. To this day, much of the city's inhabitants speak Italian, but a good percentage also speaks German.
A city over 800 years old, its streets are thick with history. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology houses the famous Similaun Man, whose remains are approximately 5300 years old (found in 1991, on the Similaun glacier). The museum offers historical and archeological displays focusing on the history of South Tyrol. Explore the cobblestone streets, and a grand variety of Gothic and Roman architecture. Don't miss the Roncolo Castle, located a short distance from the city of Bolzano. Built in 1237 by brothers Friedrich and Beral von Wangen, it was severely damaged by a siege in 1274. Its character came after it was rebuilt in the 1380's, receiving beautiful frescoes and murals depicting captions from Der Pleier's Garel.
Luckily, Mother Nature has been particularly generous with this lush Italian getaway. Well-known as the cradle of Aveglinesi horses, take a trip to see the magnificent alpine forests, or take a cable car for magnificent views of the mountains and highlands!
