Flights to Brescia
Brescia (2004 population 192,165) is nestled in
the northern region of Lombardy, right at the foot of the Alpine
mountains. The next largest city from
Milan, Brescia has been an important centre since pre-Roman times. Much of the early foundation of Brescia is
shrouded with tales of Hercules, Altilia, and other mythical and historical
characters. Though its original founders
are largely under debate, the city became Roman in 225 BC. In 89 BC it was recognized as a city, and in
41 BC received Roman citizenship.
Rare early documents are housed in the Biblioteca Queriniana, including
a 14th century manuscript by Dante a Florentine poet of the Middle
Ages. Home to many Lombard kings,
Brescia is known for its many extravagant villas, castles and cathedrals. Visit the Duomo Vecchio, the Old
Cathedral , also known as La Rotonda.
This Romanesque church was built in the 11th century and
welcomes you through an entrance of pink Veronese marble. It houses such paintings as the Assumption,
the Evangelists Luke and Mark, and Feast of the Paschal Lamb, and
Eli and the Angel by Alessandro Bonvicino. This city holds centuries-old artwork, and
can take days to view it all. Like much
of Italy, Brescia is an art-lover s city!
