Flights to Broome
Broome
(2006 population 11,547), a known tourist town, is located in the Kimberley
region of Western Australia. Its
year-round population jumps in the tourist season from 14, 000 to about 30,
000. The town of Broome lies in the
Aboriginal grounds of the Jukun and Yawuru people. First visited by the English buccaneer
William Dampier in 1688, in 1879 Charles Harper thought it would be suitable to
serve the pearling industry in a port closer to pearling grounds. He decided Roebuck Bay would be a fine spot,
and in 1883, John Forrest chose the site for the town to be established. Named after the Governor Sir Frederick
Broome, the harvesting of mother of pearl oysters became prominent in the
1880's. With the mining boom of the 60's
and the recent growth in tourism, Broome grew and developed into the Australian
gem that is today.
During low tide go to Gantheaume Point and keep an eye out for a very unique
treasure. 30 metres out to sea, real
dinosaur footprints are engraved in the land, believed to be from the
Cretaceous Period and possibly over 130 million years old. If beach-hopping is your forte, visit Cable
Beach for a beautiful afternoon. Not far
from town, this unique white sand beach cradles near-flat turquoise water
perfect for swimming. Bask in the
tropics, and catch a sunset camel ride along the beach to explore more of the
area than you can see on foot. Broome is
full of fun activities that can only truly be enjoyed in the hidden domestic
towns of Australia. See what people are
flocking to, and investigate for yourself!
