It was in Charlottetown that the Fathers of Confederation first met in 1864 to discuss the possible union of all British North America into one country. As a result of the Charlottetown Conference, the birth of a nation took place when Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario united to form the Dominion of Canada.

The areas to the west, north and east of downtown have recently been developed with several residential and commercial/retail dwellings, although the outer regions of the city are still predominantly farmland. Other significant economic activities include light manufacturing such as chemicals, bio-technology, and machining.
