Comox serves as an entry point to the Mount Washington Alpine Resort, a popular ski and snowboard destination, and to Strathcona Provincial Park, which boasts the largest glacier on Vancouver Island. It is known for being home of the Lorne Hotel, the oldest licensed establishment in British Columbia, and for the Filberg Festival, an annual summertime arts and crafts extravaganza. Situated in the lush Comox Valley, this city is bordered by the Strait of Georgia to the east and by the Beaufort Mountains to the west.
The name Comox is derived from the Kwakwala Indian word Komuckway, meaning "Place of Plenty", a reference to the abundant game and berries in the Comox Valley. European settlers adapted the name to Komoux, then finally to Comox. With a moderate climate, year-round recreational activities like skiing, swimming and golfing make for a wonderful place to visit.
