*Source: TnoozThe fact that Curacao is a part of the Netherlands Antilles but baseball is the national passion should give you a hint that this is not your average Caribbean island. A mixture of Dutch and Caribbean lifestyle has resulted in Curacao's own language, culture, and food. The capital Willemstad is well deserving of its heritage status with beautifully preserved architecture inland and around the port area. After a day spent spotting flamingos and hiking through the Curacao Christoffelpark reserve, enjoy a relaxed evening in Willemstad looking over the floating 'Swinging Old Lady' Bridge open and close over the Sint Annabaai Channel.
Those interested in diving will enjoy Curacao's many beaches and the 'blue edge', where the sea floor drops sharply a mere 100 feet from the shore. For everyone else, there is the Floating Market at Punda, Ostrich game farms, sea aquariums, two forts, several museums, and even a synagogue to visit. Public transportation is minimal so renting a car is the best way to get around. Curacao cuisine is heavy on seafood and a lot of spice, so be sure to order a drink with your meal!
International flights arrive and depart from Hato International Airport (CUR) which is on the north side of the island near Willemstad. There is a departure tax at this airport so check the details before you fly. Airlines flying to Curacao include American Airlines, Continental, Delta, and KLM. If you're arriving here from South America or other destinations in the Caribbean, there are several local carriers that fly to Hato Airport.

The annual Carnival, which ends on Ash Wednesday each year, fills up the island from February to March and you'll be lucky if you can get a flight or accommodation at all during the peak season from December to April. The rains are not very heavy, so even a trip during the October/November period would be worthwhile, and the fares would definitely be lower. Year-round, temperatures average 27°C.
