Gander Information
Gander is a Canadian town located in the Northeastern part of the island of Newfoundland with a population of nearly 10,000 residents. Gander's airport was an important base in World War II, and is currently a hub for International flights attracting many refugees. It was also the site of a December 1985, plane crash that killed 256 passengers, 248 of them being U.S. soldiers returning from the Middle East.
The city also played an important role during the 2001 September 11th terrorist attacks. Trans-Atlantic flights were ordered to land in Gander and during this time Gander residents volunteered to house, feed and entertain stranded travelers in what became known as "Operation Yellow Ribbon."
Following the attacks, Lufthansa named one of its Airbus A340 aircrafts "Gander Halifax" to thank both cities for their handling of rerouted travelers on September 11th.
