Gaya is a city in Bihar, and is also the headquarters of the Gaya District. Gaya (2001 population 3,500,000) is located just south of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.Lying upon the banks of the Falgu River, the city is sanctified by both Hindu and Buddhist religions. The city has a mix of natural surroundings, age old buildings and narrow bylines. Gaya is important to Hindu mythology, and its name is derived from the mythological demon Gayasur-- meaning 'Gaya the holy demon'. Hindus believe that the god Vishnu killed Gayasur with the pressure of his foot upon him. They believe that this incident formed the region into a series of rock hills. Gayasur was so holy he had the power to absolve the sins of whoever touched or looked at him, and since his death many people have flocked to the city to perform pilgrimages and sacrifices. The hilltops of Gaya hold many temples of Hindu gods and goddesses. There are many Holy sites in Gaya, and many Hindus visit the city; some perform Chhat Puja in the Falgu River today. Gaya is also an important place to Buddhists, as it was Brahmayoni Hill that Buddha preached the Fire Sermon to 100 former fire-worshippers who were then converted and enlightened. Documented history of the city dates back to the enlightenment of Gautam Buddha, and since then, sites around Gaya had been the citadel of knowledge for the ancient world.

Well-connected to the rest of India by railways, roadways and airways, Gaya offers many avenues of exploration to its travelers. Gaya is a place where many soul-seekers, from around India and the world alike, travel to explore the meaning of faith and to educate themselves. The amount of mythology and history within Gaya is enough to interest even non-believers, and should be respected as an important site nonetheless. Visit the Mahabodhi Temple, the site believed to be where Gautam Buddha attained his enlightenment. Some of the world's most amazing temples lay here, such as the 300 ft tall Vishal Buddha Mandir, or the Vishnupadh Temple. The cuisine in Gaya is common to the rest of Bihar, the most popular of them including marua-ka-roti, bari-dal, sattu, litti, and many more. Gaya is also home to several sweet delicacies famous in Bihar. The most popular of the sweets is Tilkut, prepared using sesame seeds and jaggery or sugar. Both Ramna and Tekari Road are areas of the city in which every other house produces Tilkut.
