An important northern seaport, Genoa
(2006 population 620,316) is the capital of the Province
of Genoa in the Liguria region. The first historically known inhabitants of Genoa were the ancient
Ligurians an Italic tribe. The Genoese
people traded pelts, honey, and wood, and shipped much of their goods to cities
such as Tortona and Piacenza. At the time of Genoa's
peak in the 16th century, the city attracted many artists: Rubens, Van Dyck, and the great Caravaggio. Galeazzo Alessi, a renowned architect of the 14th century, designed
the city s astonishing palazzi.
In the old city, visit one of the most recent contributors to the World Heritage List (2006) The Strada Nuova. This district was created to house the most
elite families of early Genoa. Nearby, you can explore the famous art
college Musei di Strada Nuova.

Harbor (Porto Antico) contains many landmarks,
and has been transformed into a mall in recent years. Porto
