Flights to Gorakhpur
Near the border of Nepal
and in the state of Uttar Pradesh is the eastern city of Gorakhpur (population
3 million). It is the administrative
headquarters of the Gorakhpur District and of the Gorakhpur Division. Gorakhpur is a famous religious centre, and
is home to Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Sikh saints. This holy city is named after the medieval
saint Gorakshanath. The birthplace of
the great Paramhansa Yogananda saint, the city is also home to many historic
Buddhist sites and the Gita Press-- a publisher of Hindu religious texts. In ancient times, Gorakhpur was fully covered
in forests in which sages lived in their ashrams, teaching boys from all over
India. It was at the confluence of the Rapti and Rohini rivers that Gautama Buddha--
the founder of Buddhism-- renounced his princely clothing before setting out on
his quest of truth in 600 BC. Also a
place of politics, Gorakhpur played a pivotal role in the Indian independence
movement of the 20th century, and is a now a major industrial and business
centre.
Gorakhpur is home to many important Indian figures, such as the mystic poet and
saint Kabir, whose work urged his fellow men to live in peace and religious
harmony. Kabir's final resting grounds
attract a very large number of pilgrims every year. Home to one of India's most famous Hindi
novelists, Munshi Premchand, his home and writing studio still stands today in
Munshi Premchand Park and is also visited by curious tourists. Many visitors come to witness various religious
temples and sites, including the Gorakhnath Temple-- supposedly constructed on
the spot where Gorakshanath practiced Hatha Yoga to develop self-control. Gorakhpur also offers various non-religious sites,
including Vinod Van (a mini zoo), Gita Press, the Syed Modi Railway Stadium,
the Navneet Kumar Banglow (a Diwan bazar), Ambedkar Park, and Laldiggi
Park.
