Grenoble is a lively and modern city, located
in the southeast of France, at the foot of the Alps where the Drac
joins the Isere River. Due
to its proximity to the mountains, Grenoble has been dubbed the "Capital
of Alps . Although quite a bustling
university town today, Grenoble is also rich with historical significance. The Princes of Dauphin held court here in the
Middle Ages and Grenoble was also the site of the 1788 Journ e des Tuiles uprising, which is held to be the first act
of the French Revolution.
When touring Grenoble, be sure to visit the
impressive Bastille, which is an ancient series of fortifications
sitting on the mountainside and overlooking the whole town. With its semi-underground defense network,
the Bastille is the most extensive example of 19th century fortifications in
all of France. The Bastille is also the
destination of Les Bulles , a system of egg-shaped cable cars.
