Hamilton Information
Hamilton is a historic city encompassing 5 surrounding municipalities - Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook and Stoney Creek - to make up "The new amalgamated City of Hamilton". The city has earned nicknames such as Steeltown, Lunch Bucket City and Hammertown. Hamilton has a total population of 490,268 residents (1/4 of them foreign-born) making it the 8th largest city in Canada and is located at the head of Lake Ontario, between Niagara Falls and Toronto.
The beautiful Hamilton Harbour was discovered by explorer Robert Cavelier De La Salle in 1669 leading to the founding of the city in 1816, which was named after George Hamilton, a settler. Hamilton's proximity to both natural resources and retail markets, and the accessibility of transportation have helped make Hamilton one of the main industrial centres for Canada today.
There is a wide range of the museums and historic homes in Hamilton. The jewel of the city is Dundurn Castle, a classic Regency style villa, restored to the style of 1855 that operates as an historic window to the past. Whitehern is another historic site, next to city hall. Almost hidden gardens surround the home where the McQuesten family lived from 1852 to 1968. The city also boasts The Museum of Steam and Technology, The Canadian Warplane Heritage, Hamilton Harbour and downtown's Copps Coliseum.
