Flights to Hobart
Located in the Australian island state of
Tasmania is Hobart, the state capital and most populous city (2006 population
205,566). One of Australia's oldest
cities, Hobart is the financial and administrative center of Tasmania. Mount Wellington sits in the background of
the city, and Hobart sits on the estuary of the Derwent River. In 1803, a colony of working British convicts
settled at Risdon Cove on the Derwent River.
The following year the colony was moved to a more prime location where
Hobart is now found. The British definitely
were not the first to arrive: the Mouheneener
tribe we re already frequenting the land.
After several battles, and due to disease brought by the European
settlers, the aboriginal population moved away and gave room for more free
settlers and convicts. Hobart was the
center of the South whaling and sealing trade, and grew to be an important port
focused on expanding to different trades.
In 1842, the town officially became a city.
Don't visit Hobart without exploring the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens,
only a short distance from the city's downtown.
The second-oldest of it's kind in all of Australia, it was established
in 1818 and lyes in the Queens Domain.
Investigate historic plant collections and interesting trees, some of
which date back as far as the 19th Century.
Visit the climatically controlled area that contains the world's only
Subantarctic Plant House-- with vegetation from the sub-antarctic
highlands. Traces of Aboriginal use of
the area can still be seen today. You
can't miss it: Mount Wellington, dominating the city's skyline. Don't settle for just a view-- the mountain
is accessible by passing through Fern Tree.
Mount Wellington is very important to local Hobartians, and determines
much of the city's weather. Check out
the thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem, rich in biodiversity.
