A trip to Honduras will lead you on a journey of discovery in Central America without the gloss of a traditional tourist destination. Despite some political and social unrest, the country remains quite safe to travel around, its beaches and islands offering divers cheap alternatives to other countries in the area. Besides the Mayan ruins in Copán, a visit to the Cayos Cochinos (Hog Islands) and Roatan Island are well worth a trip to experience the culture of the Garifuna people, as well as the spectacular ocean life in the marine reserve area. Comayagua, a former capital and the port city of La Ceiba have beautifully preserved architecture which will not disappoint.
Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas, Lago de Yojoa, and the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve are just a few of the many nature reserves and parks available for hiking, fishing, snorkeling, and diving. La Moskitia, Central America's largest rainforest has monkeys, crocodiles, tapirs, and several species of birds. Be sure to take a guide!
You may need a drink to wash down the sometimes spicy Honduran food of burritas, tamales, and fresh fish, and there are several local beer brands to choose from. But for the true flavour of Honduras, try the local coffee.

Temperatures change depending on elevation, ranging from 16°C to 32°C from the mountainous areas to the coasts. Rainfall is heaviest between September and February on the Caribbean coast, and from May to November further inland. Hurricanes, though infrequent, do occur, so check for any travel warnings before you fly. Although March is recommended as a good time to travel in terms of prices as well as weather, the country is beautiful whether it's wet or dry. So when you want to visit is dependent on how much you mind the afternoon showers.
