Hong Kong’s complicated history with colonialism gives it a unique identity that is far removed from the Chinese mainland. As an international hub for trade, commerce, and travel, you’re likely to run into ‘locals’ from Vancouver, Sydney, New York, or Mumbai. A flight to Hong Kong is the first stop for many travellers making onward journeys into Asia, or to Australia and New Zealand. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a marvel of design, efficiency, and sheer size, from where you can get an express train, bus, or taxi into the city.
Hong Kong is a city meant for walking. Every side street leads to another hidden temple, street market, or quiet spot for Tai Chi. If you’re tired, a ‘Ding Ding’ tram, train, or bus stop is never far away and an Octopus card will give you access to all three. An escalator or tram from the aptly named Central area goes to Victoria Peak, a mountainside with some of the world’s priciest real estate and spectacular views of Victoria Harbour – definitely worth a visit.
Perfect your poker face at Hong Kong’s many Mahjong parlours or try your luck at the horse races in Happy Valley. If you’re travelling with children, stop by the Repulse Bay beaches, Disneyland Resort, and Ocean theme park, or head away from the bright lights and skyscrapers to Kowloon, the New Territories, and Lantau Island. Be sure to eat up – food in Hong Kong is a gastronomic delight. Delicacies like snake meat, frogs, and snails are readily available at street stalls and five-star restaurants alike, alongside more conventional fare.
Air Canada, Continental, United, and Korean Air, have frequent cheap flights to Hong Kong and onward from Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and several other Canadian airports.
