Flights to Luxor
Luxor is a city in southern Egypt, and is also
the capital of the Luxor Governorate.
Luxor (1999 population 376,022) lies on the Nile River, and much of its
economy lies in the tourism industry, and also in agriculture-- primarily
producing sugarcane. Luxor is the site
of an ancient Egyptian city called Thebes, and has been characterized as the
world's largest open-air museum.
Remnants from its early days as the city of Thebes still remain right
within modern-day Luxor. Thebes was the
capital city during the 11th Dynasty, and most of the 18th Dynasty. Archaeological evidence found in Thebes
offers astonishing insights into Egyptian civilization at its peak. Presumed to be a very wealthy city in ancient
times, its name meant the "city of the sceptre" or "the
foremost". Thebes was a
thriving and luxurious centre for wisdom, art, religion and politics. A city dedicated to the sun-god Amon-Ra,
his main temple at Karnark (just north of Thebes) was the most important temple
in all of Egypt right until the end of antiquity.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Luxor annually to witness the
breathtaking site of one of the most ancient civilizations known to man. Next to the modern city of Luxor and the Nile
River, lie the famous monuments, temples and tombs of the West Bank
Necropolis-- including the Valley of the Kings, and the Valley of the
Queens. The Valley of the Kings is the
final resting place of major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, and is
an area of extreme interest to archaeologists and Egyptologists alike. The most famous of the archaeological
discoveries was of the tomb of Tutankhamun, with its rumored "Curse
of the Pharaohs". Both valleys have
been extremely important and protected, and are considered one of the more
famous archaeological sites in the world.
Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, these exciting Theban
sites continue to be explored, excavated and conserved-- offering an
educational and interesting opportunity for the whole family to discover.
