For some time now there has been a debate as to what city
is the oldest in the Netherlands and the battle has come between Nijmegen and
Maastricht. Although Nijmegen was given
Roman city rights 500 years after Maastricht had known to have settlement, but
never the rights, the debate still stands.
With Maastricht being one of the oldest there are many
structures built in different eras and influences that jump from gothic to
modern architecture. The cobble stone
roads add an old feeling to the city and culture comes to life. There are beautiful squares, castles, rivers
and meadows to visit and boutiques to stop in for a quick shop.
For better understanding of the city and its cultures,
visit the Natural History museum, where you can go back hundreds of years and
have an appreciation of how the city started out, and what it has become
now. There are many exhibits for all
ages to enjoy and several other museums to visit as well, each with its own
specializations in history.
Make sure that you give the night life of Maastricht a
shot. There you will be able to choose a
relaxing night on the town to a lovely dinner and a stroll along the town, or a
club hopping night and test out some of its most popular night clubs. With plenty of hot spots spread out about the
town there is a good chance that you will find something that you enjoy and
make your trip all the more worth it.
