Kilimanjaro
is a one of 26 regions located in Tanzania and is home to over 1.3 million
residents. As a region, Kilimanjaro is
divided into 6 districts. Hai, Moshi Rural, Moshi Urban, Rombo, Mwanga and
Same. The capital of the Kilimanjaro region is the town of Moshi which is
nestled on the lower slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest mountain. Moshi
has a population of over 140,000 residents but is often neglected as tourist
destination with visitors choosing to stay in nearby Arusha instead. However, the town of Moshi is starting to
become a destination of choice for many travelers. Visitors to Moshi can
explore the many shops that line the streets selling carvings, paintings and
souvenirs. More recently, the town of Moshi has hosted the Kilimanjaro Marathon
which has increased in popularity every year. The town is also developing
several tourism programs focusing on the regions culture. Moshi is also a base
camp for those brave enough to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. The town boasts a very dynamic
nightlife. Travelers can experience live
performances at The Honey Gadger Centre or sample local authentic cuisine in
the many restaurants. The Kilimanjaro
region may not have been a destination of choice but it won t disappoint the
curious traveler.
