Munich Flights Guide

Beer and BMWs are Munich's calling cards, and visitors who come to experience either one are rarely left disappointed. Oktoberfest is renowned the world over as the last word in beer festivals and with hundreds of local and international brands sold by the litre, world-class music performances, and an atmosphere that is yet to be matched by other festivals seeking to follow in its footsteps, this is an experience to be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime. If your trip is also fueled by the need for speed, be sure to sober up before taking a some of BMW's fastest cars on a test drive through the city.

Teetotalers will also find plenty to keep them occupied in the cradle of Bavarian culture and traditions. Between the city's Gothic architecture, museums, and modern art galleries, culture vultures can while away hours on end before trying out the local cuisine which is delightfully different from the rest of Germany. Those looking for something with more international appeal can find it in one of the many fusion restaurants that have sprung up across the city, and if you're booking Munich flights for the wintertime, the city's colourful Christmas markets are the place to go to shop on the cheap, eat and drink to your heart's content, and celebrate the holidays just like the locals do.

Booking Flights to Munich

Munich International Airport (MUC) is second only to Frankfurt in terms of passenger volume, making it Germany's second-busiest airport. It is also a major hub for Lufthansa, which has several direct flights to Munich from Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. Other carriers that serve this airport include KLM, United, Delta, Continental, and American Airlines, to name just a few. MUC is located about 40 minutes north-east of the city, and is well connected to Munich as well as its neighbouring cities and towns.

Although Memmingen Airport (FMM) is located near Munich as well, this airport is used only by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Wizzair, while most other international and domestic carriers fly to MUC.

When to Go and Weather

Summers in Munich have daytime highs of 23-24°C and little chance of rain, making this a popular time to visit the city. October sees Munich at its crowded best, and flights to the city sell out quickly with tourists heading here for the famous beer festival.

Munich flights are cheapest in the wintertime, barring the weeks around Christmas and New Year's when tourists turn up in droves to visit the city's Christmas markets. But if you want to experience the outdoor attractions here without sub-zero temperatures and snow, you can find cheap flights between March and May which is the shoulder season for travel to the city.

Arriving in Munich

Munich International Airport (MUC) has two main terminals and an Airport Center in between them. Lufthansa, its partner airlines, and Star Alliance carriers use Terminal 2 while Terminal 1 deals with all other airline traffic. Most transport services depart from Munich Airport Center and you can find additional details on these facilities on the airport's website.

Public Transit: The city's S-Bahn train line connects the airport to Munich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) via lines S-1 and S-8 and tickets cost approximately €10 for a one-way trip.

Airport Shuttle: An Airport Bus operated by Lufthansa will take you to North and Central Munich for a one-way fare of approximately €11. Discounts are available for children's tickets or if you book a return trip. Although operated by Lufthansa, this shuttle is available to passengers travelling on all airlines. A variety of service providers also operate buses from the airport to nearby cities like Erding, Freising, and Landshut.

Hotel Shuttle: Munich hotels such as Hotel Hallnberg and Corbin Feng Shui offer their guests shuttle services to and from the airport. Private service providers also provide shuttle services between the airport and specified hotels in the city, although these will have to be booked in advance online or via telephone.

Taxi: Taxi stands are located outside Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the central area between the two. A trip to the city will cost about €65, although fares may vary depending on the type of car you choose. Sedans as well as station wagons and minibuses are all available for those travelling in larger groups.

Car Rental: Munich is well connected by public transport and most visitors will not need a car to get around the city. However, if you would like to rent a car, you can do so at the airport's Car Rental Center where companies like Sixt, Hertz, and Avis have booking counters.

Other: The airport website has a comprehensive list of companies which provide limousines and transfer services. If you'd like to start off your trip to Munich in style, get in touch with one of these companies before you board your flight.
