Flights to Naples
Naples (2007 population 975,139) is the capital city of the Campania region, in the province of Naples. Rich in history, Naples has played an important role throughout
much of its existence. Nearly 3000 years
old, Naples is nestled between Mount Vesuvius
and the Phlegraean Fields on the coast of the Gulf of Naples. Founded by Greeks in the 7th
century BC, it was very important to the Roman Empire. Naples
was the capital of a kingdom which bore its name from 1282 to 1816. Even in early times, Naples was an extravagant civilization
littered with elegant villas, public baths, aqueducts, an Odeon, and a theatre. Rich with art and culture, it is easy to see why it
was a chosen holiday to emperors even in it s earliest of times.
Gaze upon the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, a
volcano whose slopes hosted the ancient Battle
of Mons Lactarius. Mount Vesuvius is best known for it s destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD, whose
preserved remains were discovered accidentally in 1748. Today, the site of Pompeii is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and attracted over 2
million visitors in 2007.
With the invention of the romantic guitar, the mandolin, and strong
contributions to the world of opera, it is worth it to explore the various
music venues within Naples.
In addition to music, this Italian city
has a long history of producing famous wines and dishes. Pizza, having been invented in Naples, should be at the
top of the list. Traditionally made as a
meal for the poor, under King Ferdinand IV it became very popular. Lastly, don t forget to enjoy an Italian Margarita named
after Queen Margherita of Italy
after a visit to the city.
