While it is also a hub of culture and history, country music continues to define the capital of Tennessee, and everyone who's anyone in the industry has made their way here. Although Nashville flights will take you to a star-studded town, the city is still a far cry from Los Angeles' glamorous vibe and you're likely to spot the rich-and-famous riding around in their pick-up trucks just like anybody else.

Take a tour of the Grand Ole Opry which has been putting on a weekly radio show since 1925, and stop by the Country Music Hall of Fame where you can see all the greats from Little Jimmy Dickens to Vince Gill given their rightful place of honour. There are plenty of historic buildings and stately old homes that allow visitors throughout the year and for a short road trip out of town, you can visit the Jack Daniel's whiskey distillery in nearby Lynchburg. Nashville International Airport (BNA) is located less than 10 km from the city centre and several US-based airlines such as American, Continental, US, Delta, and Southwest have regular flights between Nashville and cities across North America. Air Canada has direct flights to Nashville from Toronto but you can also travel via stopovers in New York or Chicago. Cheap flights are relatively easy to find, especially if you're booking well in advance, but for a last-minute airfare that doesn't cost the earth, try low-cost carriers like United Express Airlines or Branson Air Express.

When to Go and Weather

Nashville has its best weather from April to August. Not coincidentally, this is also when most of the major music festivals are held and therefore it's a peak tourist period with very few cheap flights or hotel rooms to be found. June is usually packed with the most events so book tickets well in advance if this is when you want to go. Winter temperatures can drop to near-freezing and there is a fair amount of snow, but flights to Nashville will still be expensive in the holiday season from November to December. Plan your trip for October or March to get the best of good weather and and cheap flights to Nashville.

Arriving in Nashville

International flights to Nashville International Airport (BNA) will bring you to Concourse A at the North end of the Arrival gates while Concourses A to D are also served by domestic airlines. The main terminal building connects all four Concourses and you can easily walk from one to the other to catch a connecting flight.

Public Transit: The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) runs an hourly bus service on Route 18 seven days a week from the airport to downtown Nashville. At less than $2 USD for a one-way fare, this is the cheapest travel option to get to the city. The bus stop is located on Level 1 of the main terminal building.

Airport Shuttle: A number of companies provide door-to-door shared-ride shuttles as well as exclusive vehicle and limousine services from the airport to downtown Nashville and regional destinations in Tennessee. Average one-way fares for shared rides range from $15-$20 to the city centre and discounts are available for group bookings.

Hotel Shuttle: Several hotels provide courtesy pick-up shuttle services from the airport and a detailed list of these hotels is provided on the airport's website. There are also courtesy phones located in the baggage claim areas that you can use to contact your hotel, as well as customer service kiosks on Level 1 if you require further assistance.

Taxi: Cab services are provided by seven registered companies including Allied, American Music City, Yellow, Checker, Diamond, Nashville, and United. There is a flat rate of approximately $25 USD for trips to downtown Nashville and the Opryland Hotel while trips to other destinations are charged at a starting fare of $7-10 USD and $2 USD per additional 1.6 km.

Car Rental: Rental car companies located at the airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, Dollar, National, and Thrifty. They are all located in different areas on Level 1 of the airport's main building so after your Nashville flight lands and you've collected your luggage, follow the signs for the rental company of your choice.
