The central-Italian city of Pisa (2007 population 87,506) is in the Tuscany region.  The city lies at the forefront of the Arno River overlooking the beautiful Ligurian Sea and is the capital city of the Pisa Province.  Unidentified for centuries, archaeological remains prove that a city existed at the river junctions around the 5th century BC, a trading point for Gauls and Greeks.  Pisa is believed to have been founded some 13 centuries before the Common Era, presumably by the Etruscan people.  This prosperous city is said to have been the sole port on Genoas coast to Ostia.  In 180 BC, under Roman law, Pisa became a Roman colony.

North of the old town square lies the Piazza dei Miracoli square of miracles .  In its many paths you will find the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa .  The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a freestanding bell tower, made for the main cathedral (Duomo) of Pisa.  It is the third oldest structure in the Piazza del Duomo ( Cathedral Square ), behind the baptistery and the cathedral.  Constructed over a period of about 177 years, it began in the summer of 1173.

Home to such names as Galileo and Fibonacci, Pisa is also home to a number of ancient cathedrals.  Don t miss sights such as the Romanesque church of San Paolo a Ripa d Arno which was founded in about 952 and revamped to a larger size in the mid 12th century.  Feast your eyes on a 12th century roman sarcophagus used as a medieval tomb, a 13th century Crucifix on panel, frescoes by Buffalmacco, and the 14th century painting Madonna with Saints by Turino Vanni.
