Known historically as The Clearing , Portland, Oregon has grown from a large piece of clear land into a large metropolis. It is the largest city in the state and has a population of 537, 081 (2006). Oregon is located where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers meet and is near two potentially active volcanoes. Downtown Portland is where you will find the majority of its attractions. There are museums, arts and cultural centers, galleries, shopping and restaurants. Portland has many beautiful large and small parks throughout the city and has made it a policy to preserve many public park areas in the city. There are many wineries and distilleries in Portland and it is known for its microbrewery beer.
