Established in 1867, Puerto Plata
is a province in Northern Dominican Republic and has been a popular tourist
destination since the late 90 s. As per
the 2008 census the entire area of Puerto Plata including its 9 municipalities
was 789,986 residents. As the Dominican
Republic is known as the Wedding destination of the Caribbean, Puerto Plata
(Sosua) is one of the most beautiful spots to tie the knot. If your visiting this vibrant city be sure to
check out the local night-life. The meringue
is a huge part of the local heritage the Merengue Festival is held in late
October and it definitely a sight to see.
There is also some of the best diving and snorkeling off of the North
Coast. Encounter canyons, shipwrecks, gardens
and reefs with water temperatures of nearly 80 degrees. Be sure to discover the history of the
Concepcion, a shipwreck (60 miles from Puerto Plata) which carried silver coins
some of which were recovered in 1689 and the rest found by an American in collaboration
with the local government in 1979. As
well, when heading to Puerto Plata check out the local windsurfing spots. Windsurfing is one of the North Coast s (mainly
Cabarete s) largest sports.
