Flights to Rhodes

Close to the Turkish border, in the Aegean Sea, lie s the island of Rhodes (2001 population 117,007).  The largest of the Dodecanese Islands and shaped like a spearhead, Rhodes was historically famous for the Colossus of Rhodes (then, one of Seven Wonders of the World).  This grand statue of the sun-god Helios no longer exists, but is documented as being 107 ft in height, built on two large pillars at the entrance of the city.  It is not known how the statue was built, around 300 BC, but it is believed to have been one of the largest statues of the ancient world.  Rhodes has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and it is believed the island is named after the rhoda, a pink hibiscus native to the island.  At one point in history, Rhodes had strong ties with the Egyptians Ptolemies in Alexandria, and passed through many different hands, through many different wars over time.  Around the 3rd Century BC, the city developed into a maritime, commercial and cultural center and its coins were in circulation almost everywhere in the Mediterranean.  Rhodes was known as a city of philosophy, science, literature and rhetoric-- and even shared masters with Alexandria.  In 164 BC, Rhodes signed a treaty with Rome, and became an educational center for Roman noble families, and was especially noted for its teachings of rhetoric.

Declared a World Heritage Site, Rhodes is a city with a vast amount of history.  Of the historical sites is the Acropolis of Rhodes, containing a small theatre and the 'Temple of Apollo'.  Other historical (and archaeological) sites include the Governor's Palace, ancient lalysos, ancient Kamiros, the Palace of the Grand Masters, the ruins of the castle of Monolithos, Rhodes Old Town and many others.  It is no wonder why thousands of tourists flock from all over the world to see this amazing city.  With beautiful beaches, and comfortable Mediterranean climate, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Rhodes
