With an estimated population of
346,799 in the 2003 census, San Jose is the largest and capital city of the
island of Costa Rica. Founded in 1738,
this city is amongst the youngest of the Latin American capitals. Tourist attractions include El Pueblo, which
is a mix of 50+ bars, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Locals and tourists keep this area vibrant
and alive from 9pm until early morning; Pueblo Antiguo, a theme park with
museums all located inside a very large compound which is called Parque de
Diversiones de Costa Rica; Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, Costa Rica s National
Theatre, the Gold Museum and the Lankester Botanical Gardens. The city has nice weather year round however
can be quite hot and humid at times. The
best time to visit San Jose is in December but is also the most jam-packed as there
is a series of festivals that lead up into the New Year.
