Flights to Sapporo
The fifth-largest city in Japan, and the capital
of the Hokkaido Prefecture, is Sapporo (2007 population 1,890,561). Located in the Ishikari Sub prefecture,
Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, and is famous for its Sapporo beer and
Brewery. The area known we know as
Sapporo was initially occupied by various Ainu settlements-- an indigenous
people of the Hokkaido region. In 1866,
construction on a canal began, and encouraged many settlers to establish the
Sapporo village. Its name is an Ainu
word meaning "large river running through a plain". 1868 is the official year recognized as the
birth of Sapporo. In 1870, Kuroda
Kiyotaka approached the American government to assist the building of the land. Today one can see that the city closely
followed the American-style grid plan, and even has streets at right angles to
form city blocks.
