Booking Flights to Saskatoon

The city centre is easily accessible from Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker Airport (YXE), which is located about 15-20 minutes away. The airport is served by full service carriers such as WestJet, Air Canada, Delta, and United, as well as regional airlines like Transwest and Pronto. There are several direct flights to Saskatoon from cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto all year round. Seasonal direct flights operate from Las Vegas, Cancun, Phoenix, and Ottawa, amongst others.

Saskatoon is a great stop-over point on cross-country flights, and it is often cheaper to fly via YXE than take a direct flight to your final destination on either coast.

When to Go and Weather

Checking the weather forecast before you board your flights to Saskatoon is always a good idea. Far away from any coast, Saskatoon temperatures vary between the mid-20s (Celsius) and less than -10°C. Between December and March, temperatures stay below freezing, there's lots of snow, and daylight lasts for barely eight hours. However, hotels and flights are cheaper around this time so if you're into cros s-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or ice skating, this is the best time to visit.

Summers, naturally, are the most popular time to book Saskatoon flights, although temperatures can really soar, sometimes going well over 30°C. For a trip to Saskatoon, remember to always carry a waterproof jacket or umbrella as thunderstorms can occur anytime.

Arriving in Saskatoon

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker Airport (YXE) is a mid-sized airport with a single terminal building. Check the airport website for more details on the transport options listed below.

Public Transit: Saskatoon Transit's Bus Number 40 is a direct service from the airport to the city's downtown area, while Bus Number 23 services Blairmore via Hampton Village. One-way tickets for adults cost about $3 CAD while children under 16 years of age can get discount fares. There are no bus services between midnight and 6 a.m. (weekdays only, weekends are more restricted) so if your flight arrives at this time, be prepared to take another form of transport.

Hotel Shuttle: Only five hotels are allowed to operate courtesy pick up shuttles from the airport so if you're counting on a shuttle waiting for you, make sure you've booked a room at the Holiday Inn, Park Town, Sandman, Saskatoon Inn, or Travelodge Hotel.

Taxi, Shuttle, and Limousine: All of these services are available from outside the terminal building. You can also hire shuttle vans and chauffeured car services from companies like United Blueline and Provincial Car Service. A one-way taxi fare from the airport to downtown Saskatoon costs about $17 CAD.

Car Rental: You can hire cars from Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, or Thrifty. During the busy festival season, it may be better to book a package deal which includes a rental car along with your flights to Saskatoon, as prices are usually higher for independent bookings during this peak travel period. If you're planning on exploring the parks and trails outside the city, renting a car is the best way to get around as access to public transport and taxis will be limited.
