A small island in the Aegean Sea, Skiathos (2001 population 6,160) is the westernmost island in the Sporades islands. The island boats 70 golden beaches, one nudist beach, and connects surrounding islands to the Greek mainland by ferry. The famous movie Mamma Mia was partially filmed in Skiathos and on some of the neighboring islands. Skiathos has held the same name since pre-Hellenistic times. It is believe that the name was bestowed upon the town by the Pelasgians-- its primary inhabitants-- who were likely impressed by the shadow of many trees covering the island ('skia' meaning shadow in Greek). The early people of Skaithos were believed to worship the god of wine and plays-- Dionysus, whose cult name was "Skianthos". The strategic and fertile position of the island attracted many invaders, and later the inhabitants of Chalkis colonized Skiathos-- using the land for vine and olive cultivation. Over its history, Skiathos has gone through many hands, and was even captured by the famous Turkish pirate Barbarossa in 1538. It was not until 1830 that Skiathos became a part of the newly independent Greece.
Considered a protected area, Skiathos is a magnificently green island, with much of it still very forested. With rolling hills and valleys, the island is very popular despite its size, and can get very busy in the summer months. Its beaches, secluded by trees and with crystal clear waters, are the main attraction for many tourists. Skiathos makes an enjoyable vacation easy, and is well-organized and prepared for its tourists. The island offers all kinds of tourist facilities and accommodations, yet offers an air of authenticity and tradition. Outside of the tourist areas are very traditional, safe and friendly villages to explore. With all of its acquired popularity, Skiathos has gained a reputation of having a very lively nightlife. From romantic to trendy, from quaint pubs to fine restaurants, this town had everything to offer its visitors. In Skiathos, there is never a shortage of fun to be had!
