Stephenville and its surrounding area were once known as the Acadian Village. From 1848 until 1870, Stephenville was actually called Indian Head. The community got its name because of the resemblance of the face in the mountain.
Surrounded by the ocean, lakes, rivers, forests and mountains Stephenville exemplifies the best of the Newfoundland outdoors. The climate is also prefect for a lifestyle that includes outdoor activities. Tourists flock to this outdoor town to participate in such activities as canoeing, salmon fishing, kayaking, bird watching, camping, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.
