Taiwan Flight Guide

If Taiwan's technological prowess and pop music reputation are clearly evident in Taipei and Hsinchu, its magnificent natural beauty lies in the lush green slopes of Alishan, unique islands of Lanyu and Kinmen, and the enormous depths of Taroko Gorge. So leave the flurry of Taipei and Hsinchu, and head over to Sixty Stone Mountain, visit Ruiki aboriginals at Maolin's park, or discover ancient basalt cliffs and Chinese temples on the Pescadores.

For those who just can't leave the city, Taipei is not all about the tall buildings and high-tech gizmos. There are temples, historic buildings, and museums tucked away throughout this capital city and plenty of green spaces to relax in. A short drive takes you a world away to Pinglin, where cycling routes wind through endless tea plantations and you can kayak, swim, or fish in the river. For adventure-seekers, wind-surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and mountain biking are becoming increasingly popular throughout the country and there are several locations for you to indulge in your chosen activity. To get to the heart and soul of the Taiwanese, brush up on your baseball knowledge or join in any one of the numerous festival celebrations with a glass of rice wine, kaoliang, or more traditional mountain teas.

Booking Flights to Taiwan

Dayuan's airport near Taipei (TPE) is the country's main international airport while Taipei's downtown airport (TSA) serves domestic flights and a few from the Chinese mainland. Kaohsiung (KHH) and Taichung (RMQ) are also served by international flights while there are several other airports in the country with flights to and from the Chinese mainland. Airlines with flights from Canada to Taiwan include Continental, Cathay Pacific, and Air China. Air Canada operates flights to Taiwan with airline partners such as Japan Airlines, Dragonair, United, and All Nippon Airways. All flights will require a stop over in a hub airport such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, or Shanghai.

When to Go and Weather

Taiwan has a largely tropical climate — winters are cool, averaging 8°C, and summers are humid at 30°C. The best time to visit is between September and November when there's less likelihood of rain and accommodation rates are lower after the summer crowds have left. June to August is typhoon season so although the eastern coast of Taiwan is beautiful during this time, the weather is not completely reliable.

While the atmosphere leading up to the festival is vibrant, most of Taiwan shuts down for the first three days of Chinese New Year so visit before or after if you want to join in the celebrations.
