Flights to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki (2001
population 363,987) is the second-largest city in Greece, and is the capital of
Macedonia. This city is one of the major economical, industrial, commercial and
political centres for Greece and southeastern Europe. Founded around 315 BC by King Cassander of
Macedon, the city was named after his wife Thessalonike-- half-sister to
Alexander the Great. At the fall of the
Kingdom of Macedonia in 168 BC, Thessaloniki became a part of the Roman
Republic. It was a very important trade
hub between Asia and Europe. Many of
Thessaloniki's early Christian and Byzantine monuments have been inscribed on
the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Merchants,
traders and refugees from across Europe came to the city, and in the need for
expansion, commercial and public buildings, brought a plethora of different
architectural styles to the city. Many
different pieces of early architecture can be seen even today, including the
city's Byzantine walls, built for the it's protection.
Start your adventure through the city with a visit to the White Tower of
Thessaloniki, regarded as the symbol of the city. Now both a monument and a museum, the
centuries-old tower is considered to be a symbol of Greek sovereignty over
Macedonia. There are so many historical
sites to see in Thessaloniki, it's hard to explore them all in one day. Don't forget to take a visit to the
historical Aristotelous Square, which extends all the way from Nikis Avenue to
the Church of Panayia Halkeion along the waterfront. The square is lined with tall mansions of
affluent Thessalonikians which have now been turned into shops, restaurants and
hotels. The northern end of the square
holds a large park, and is only a short-distance from the city's thriving Old
Market. Take part in a little Greek
culture, as Thessaloniki holds a number of fairs and festivals annually. Of them includes the Thessaloniki
International Film Festival, reputed to be one of the most important film
festivals in Southeastern Europe.
