Its most prominent local industry is the mining and smelting of nickel, with ore coming from as far away as Australia. The aviation sector is also quite busy as many of the communities in Northern Manitoba are only reachable by air for half of the year.
Main area attractions include tours of the huge INCO nickel mine, the Thompson Zoo, one of the Northern most zoos in the world, Scenic Paint Lake Provincial Park, Pisew Falls and Kwasitchewan Falls. Outdoor recreational opportunities are also abound in the area including hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, swimming and hiking.
