Turin (2008 population 908,617) is a large cultural and business centre in northernmost Italy. It is the capital of the region of Piedmont along the Po River and is shadowed by the Alpine Arch. In the 1st Century BC, the Romans created a military camp, believed to be Turin, which was dedicated to Augustus (otherwise known to be the great-nephew of Julius Caesar). Turin was the Duchy of Savoy capital, the Kingdom of Sardinia, and lastly the very first capital of an amalgamated Italy. Turin is also known as the Capital of the Alps , the Automobile Capital , as well as the Subalpine Capital .
Take a walk along the still-visible Roman streets which run in a grid pattern, and visit the Church of Saint John the Baptist aka the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista the patron saint of Turin.
