Beautiful Verona, depicted in the famous balcony scene of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, lies in northern Italy. A city of romance, Verona is one of the seven provincial capitals in Veneto. Dating back to 550 BC, the city is a site of many battles and revolutions.
Throughout history, Verona has been a major centre for the arts. To this day, hundreds of thousands of people visit this city every year to view its art, visit annual fairs, shows and operas. Take part in the lyrical season festivities, housed in the third largest Arena in Italy. The Arena is an ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans in 30 AD. Gladiator battles took place in the amphitheatre in ancient times, performing to some 25,000 spectators. Its interior is impressive and virtually intact as with many Veronese building and monuments making Verona a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit the Ponte di Pietra, "Stone Wall Bridge", or the 1st century theatre not far from there. Feel the history and explore the ancient ruins of Porta Leoni a 1st century BC structure, that was once the main city gate. The street inside is an archaeological site, and further in is a gateway guarded by large towers. Here, even in ancient times, carriages would be checked upon entering and exiting the city.
A chosen getaway for lovers even Julius Caesar chose to relax here visit the bronze statue of Juliet, whose visitors polish her breast for good luck in love. With so much to do and see, be prepared to fall head over heels for this city!
