Cairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt
and the Arab World, and is Africa's most populous city (2006 population
7,947,121).This city lies on the banks
of the notorious Nile River; with its oldest part laying just to the east-- its
earliest inhabitants used the Nile for things such as travel, hygiene, and as a
source of water for crops.Shown in
early carvings and hieroglyphs, the people honored, respected and feared the
Nile. Cairo was founded by the Fatimid caliphs as a royal enclosure in 969 AD, and
passed through the hands of the Mamluks, the Ottomans, was briefly occupied by Napoleon,
Muhammad Ali of Egypt and the British until Egypt finally gained independence
in 1922.Over the centuries, the city of
Cairo grew to absorb other local towns and cities such as Fustat, and soon
became a centre of learning-- with its library boasting as many as 2 million
books.By the 16th century, Cairo had
complex high-rise apartment buildings.Cairo is nicknamed the "City of a Thousand Minarets".
From as far back 7000 years ago, Egypt was a land where different civilizations
met and mixed.Cairo has traces of Greek
and Romans, imprints of the Pharaohs, and Albanian influences from Mohammad
Ali-- all contributing to this city's modernity. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities each year,
welcomes visitors to marvel in its extensive collection of ancient Egyptian
artifacts.This museum has 136,000
unique items on display, with hundreds of thousands more within its
storerooms.The most interesting and
entertaining part of Cairo is Khan el-Khalili-- an ancient shopping area. The area dates back to 1392, when Emir
Djaharks el-Khalili built a hotel of sorts for traders of all kinds, which is
still standing today.Much of Cairo's
history can be found in Old Cairo, which contains sites such as the Coptic
Museum, Babylon Fortress, Hnaging Church, and the Greek church of St. George,
the Ben Ezra Synagogue and many more.
