Miami Flights Guide

Miami's reputation as a beach-party destination filled with bikini-clad sunbathers and nightclub hotspots sells the city short of its full potential. While our great airfares will take you to the famous white, sandy beaches and parties, there's plenty more in Miami for just about everyone. From South Beach's beautiful vistas and equally beautiful inhabitants, to Parrot Jungle Island and the Miami Seaquarium, there's entertainment to be found for snowbirds, college students on spring break, families with young children, and everyone in between.

The city is also an excellent point of departure for cruise ships heading to the Caribbean islands, South America, or even across the Atlantic. For music and dance, Caribbean and Hispanic influences merge with the good old US of A resulting in a medley which includes merengue, rumba, calypso, techno-pop, and rap. Whether you're looking for quiet, soothing tunes, a sultry Latin number, or a nightclub filled with bass beats until the wee hours, Miami has it all. So book yourself cheap Miami flights from Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, and be on your way!

Booking Flights to Miami

Miami has one of the busiest airports in the US, second only to New York's JFK and La Guardia. Miami International Airport (MIA) is a major hub for American Airlines but every major carrier in the US, Canada, the Caribbean, and South America has flights to MIA. These include WestJet, United, Delta, Air Canada, AeroMexico, LAN, Taca, and Avianca. At less than 10 kilometres from downtown Miami, MIA is the most convenient airport to fly to but you can also get a flight to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) which is about 48 kilometres north of the city. Besides low-cost airlines such as JetBlue and Allegiant Air, carriers such as Virgin, Delta, Continental, Air Canada, and Air Transat also have cheap tickets on flights to Fort Lauderdale.

When to Go and Weather

Miami has its most pleasant weather from December to March and this is the city's busiest period for visitors, especially those who travel from much colder parts in Canada and the Northern states. There's less humidity and just enough sun for you to enjoy your sightseeing trips or days on the beach but to avoid paying peak-season rates for flights and hotels, plan your visit for the shoulder seasons in November or between late-March and May. Although airfares and accommodation rates are cheaper in the summer, skip travelling during this period as the damp, hot, and extremely humid climate makes it unbearable to spend much time outdoors, even for the locals! If you need a further deterrent, this is also the peak hurricane season.

Arriving in Miami

Cheap flights to Miami will take you to either Miami International Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL). The following are your options to get from the airports to downtown Miami.

Arriving at MIA

The 51 airlines serving MIA are distributed across the North, Central, and South Terminals. Arrival gates are located on the lower level 1 while flight departures are on the upper level 2. If you're booked on a return flight for the same day, leave your luggage at the main Baggage Storage facility on Concourse E but be sure to pick it up before 9:00 p.m. For those going on cruises, service counters are located in the Central Terminal.

Public Transit: For passengers opting for public transport following their flights to Miami, there are a variety of options available. A bus station is located on the lower level of the airport at Concourse E. Transit kiosks located throughout the airport will give you route and schedule information to help you decide on which bus to take. With fares averaging a mere $2 USD per trip, this is one of the cheapest transit options. From the bus, you can connect to the free Metromover service — a train network with limited stops around the city. Alternatively, a free shuttle service operates to and from the Tri-Rail Airport Station from where you can get a train to several destinations across the city and county. One-way tickets to downtown Miami on any of these are no more than $10 USD with additional discounts if you purchase an Easy Card.

Taxi: If you haven't got far to travel, a taxi may the be a cheap and comfortable option after a long flight. Taxis can be found on the lower level, outside the baggage claim areas. Trips can cost as little as $14 USD to Miami Springs or up to $80 USD to Fort Lauderdale. Fares are metered or fixed depending on where you are going.

Airport Shuttle: SuperShuttle operates services from MIA, and their vans are dark blue, which differentiates them from the white hotel shuttles. No reservations are required and you can find them outside the baggage claim areas at the lower level arrival areas of the airport. The shuttles are a cheap option as they can be shared with other passengers, but dedicated vehicles are also available if you'd prefer to travel alone. Prices from the airport are fixed and a detailed summary of fares by destination is available on the airport's website.

Hotel Shuttle: While some hotels may provide their guests travelling on flights to Miami with a complimentary airport pick-up service, others may offer this service for a fee and fares can range from $14 USD to $40 USD depending on your destination. Hotel shuttles can be found on the upper level of the airport near the departure gates.

Car Rental: The Rental Car Center has a drop-off area on level 2 and a pick-up facility on level 1. Once your flight arrives, you can reach the Center via buses or shuttles from the main terminal building. There are 17 rental companies at the Center including Hertz, Budget, and Alamo with a further eight companies located close-by which include 247 Rent A Car, Arrow Auto Rental, and Rent Max. The MIA website has links for directions from the airport to some of Miami's most popular areas such as South Beach and Coral Gables. It is wise for passengers renting a car from the airport to consult these sources as soon as their flights arrive in Miami, as they provide real-time traffic updates and interactive maps.

Arriving at FLL

Public Transit: Buses on Route 1 stop by the airport near the rental car facility at Stop 7. One-way tickets are less than $2 USD and you can get further discounts if you have a youth or senior citizen's card. Additionally, Tri-rail services will take you into the city or to MIA if you have a connecting flight. There is a free shuttle service operating between FLL and the nearest Tri-rail station. Stops for this shuttle are located at the west end of Terminal 1, between terminals 2 and 3, and 3 and 4. One-way fares up to Zone 6 average $7 USD and discounts are available for senior citizens and children.

Taxi: Taxis are available 24 hours a day and are operated by Yellow Cab. This option may be substantially pricier than sharing a van with other passengers. The fare is metered, and a ride to MIA will cost you about $70 USD. Not all cabs accept credit cards so if you want to pay by card, mention this when hailing the cab to avoid any problems later.

City Shuttle: You can share a car or van with other passengers by stopping by the Transportation Podium located near the baggage claim areas at the lower level curb. The service operates every 30 minutes and each passenger is allowed up to two average-sized suitcases and one personal item. Wheelchairs, walking aids, and baby buggies are not included in this limit. For transfers to MIA or Miami Port you can get a shared car for a cheap rate of about $23 USD while a trip to South Beach will average approximately $20 USD. For larger groups, a van for 10 people to MIA or the port costs about $125 USD while trips to South Beach can go up to $140 USD.

Chauffeured Car Service: Go Airport Shuttle operates chauffeur-driven luxury sedans which seat up to four people. For transfers to MIA, the cost per car ranges from $70-$75 USD. Prices are fixed at a flat rate and you can obtain a travel quote by either contacting the company prior to boarding your flights to Miami, or visiting their website.

Hotel Shuttle: Many hotels offer courtesy shuttles to and from FLL airport and you should check with the hotel you have booked if they offer this amenity. Shuttle loading zones are located at the lower level curbs of all arrival terminals.

Rental Cars: The rental car facility at FLL is conveniently located near Terminal 1 and houses 12 rental companies including Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, and Budget. For passengers whose Miami flights arrive at other terminals, courtesy shuttle pick-up spots are located outside the baggage claim areas. An additional f ive rental companies which include the likes of Continental Rent A Car and Special Rentals Inc. are located away from the airport. These may provide cheaper rates or discounts as compared to on-site rental companies and provide a complimentary shuttle service and courtesy phone in the terminal for easy access.

Additional Services: If you want to live it up Miami-style, head from your flight straight to the luxury of a limousine. You can also opt for a meet-and-greet service or transfer services for large groups and you can find a detailed rate comparison on all transportation options on the airport website.
