Rome Information
Rome was founded during the first millennium, B.C., and is one of the
oldest cities in the world. Today the city proper covers 1290 sq km and
has a population of almost 3 million. The capitol city of Italy is
located between the Tiber and Aneine rivers, near the Mediterranean
Sea. The home of the Pope and the seat of all Roman Catholicism lies
within the city, in a small separate city, The Vatican. Rome is a city
steeped in history and architecture.
The Eternal City's ancient monuments and galleries, which for centuries
have been a major draw on the international tourism map, are looking
more magnificent than ever after an extensive program of restoration:
streets and squares have been repaved, historic buildings illuminated
at night and fountains cleaned. Alongside the facelift, contemporary
stars of the architectural firmament - including Richard Meyer, Zaha
Hadid and Odile Decq - are contributing to the changing face of
21st-century Rome. No city in the world is as beautiful as Rome, and
few as glamorous.
