Cascais
Just west of the capital, Cascais is where Lisbon's rich and elite have their beach homes and those of more modest means go to enjoy a quick lunch on the seafront or an afternoon swim on a hot summer's day. The town has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a fishing village and now oozes style and sophistication. Large mansions hide behind manicured gardens, and restaurants serving scrumptious local fare line the boardwalk giving you plenty of options for places to stop for a cheap drink or indulgent six-course meal. The town's historic links to Portuguese nobility can be explored at the downtown museums, including the fascinating Museum of the Sea and the Museum of Conde Castro Guimarăes, where you might even catch an orchestra or fado performance if you're lucky.
The strains of music waft over the waves as the sun goes down and Cascais' vibrant nightlife turns up the tempo. Whether you're club-hopping till dawn or just sitting on the shore and watching the lighthouse beacon flash through the night, Cascais vacations will leave you feeling refreshed and more than satisfied with how you spent your holiday time.
The waters off the coast can be quite chilly so if you're here for the water sports and beaches, book all inclusive vacations to Cascais in the summer when the water is warmer and temperatures rise to the high 20s (Celsius). Be sure to make all your travel arrangements as early as you can as this is the peak tourist season, and the town's limited accommodations fill up quickly.
All inclusive deals are a lot cheaper in winter, and discount specials abound between November and February. However, with average temperatures between 10-20°C and a fair amount of rain, this might not be the best time to enjoy a vacation on the beach. For a last minute trip that won't cost the earth but will still get you plenty of sunshine, book between March and or September and October and enjoy the additional benefit of fewer tourists on the beaches.
