The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are made up of around 60 tropical islands that combined take up around 150 square kilometres of the Caribbean. Most of the islands are volcanic, and they are all magnificently beautiful, so much so that US News Travel pegged the BVI as number nine in its list of the ‘Best Islands in the World’. It is not hard to see why. It is a beautiful group of islands that feature a hilly, lush centre with beautiful white sand beaches.
The British Virgin Islands are also a world class sailing destination, with sailboats being a popular way to visit some of the less accessible islands. Some of the resorts also have their very own yachts to pick guests up from their arriving airport, as well as for private charters to explore other islands in the archipelago. Many of the best resorts are located on a private island, giving guests a complete sense of serenity and exclusivity. There are a few private island resorts in the BVI, but these are the best of the best.
This resort is so exceptional that Condé Nast Traveller listed as one of the World’s 41 Most Incredible Private Islands. It is the most northerly of all of the islands and is accessible by taking a private jet or yacht from Beef Island Airport, or a helicopter from Virgin Gorda. The moment you reach Necker island you will be in total bliss, what with its picturesque Turtle Beach, 10-bedroom Balinese-style
villa and infinity pool complete with swim-up bar. Add to that the personal chef, 250 flamingos and impeccable spa treatments. The resort caters to families and couples, or you can rent the entire island all to yourself!
Although it is the fifth largest island in the BVI, it is 100 percent private and owned by the Van Andel family; co-owners of the Amway Corporation. The 52-room Peter Island Resort is complete barefoot luxury, from its two private beaches to its fantastic restaurant that serves cuisine on German china and top wines from around the world in Italian crystal. Even the 30-minute private ferry ride from Beef Island Airport to Peter Island is memorable, as will every morning afterwards as you awake to the sound and the views of the ocean.
The luxurious Scrub Island Resort boasts three beautiful beaches, all of which slope into the Caribbean Sea. All of the rooms and suites at the resort are set right on a beach, so they too offer spectacular views of the sea. There are also magnificent private villas that are nestled into the hills and boast sweeping views of the Caribbean and surrounding islands. The cuisine is just as divine as the accommodations, as is the tranquil spa and the private yachts that whisk guests away on intimate excursions.
