What’s There

San Miguel de Allende is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico and for good reason. It houses the gorgeous Sanctuary of Jesus of Atotonilco, a church that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, you can’t visit this city and not see the San Miguel Arcangel Parish (a symbol of the city sporting some amazing architecture). Other than the beautiful buildings you can see walking along the cobble-stoned streets, you should head to the Mercado de Artesanías for anything from food to clothing to art. And obviously build up an appetite to eat your way through this foodie mecca of Mexico. The pozole (traditional Mexican stew) and gorditas (little cornmeal pastries) are killer. You won’t regret finding a rooftop to enjoy drinks and tapas while overlooking the colourful buildings of this city!

Who’s There

While this is a city, it maintains a very village feel to it. It’s cosmopolitan, yet quaint. And the people who call this place home are an interesting mix of Mexican natives, retirees, and those of us just passing through for a short time. People who call San Miguel de Allende home are incredibly warm and welcoming. As if this city wasn’t perfect enough, there’s sunshine 300 days of the year and the climate is pleasant year-round. Definitely pack a jacket since temperatures drop at night, though. While the dress code is super casual, shorts and flip flops tend to scream tourist. It’s not frowned upon, but just keep that in mind if you’re hoping to blend in.

Getting There

When travelling to San Miguel you can either fly to Leon, Queretaro, Mexico City and further on take a car, shuttle, or bus to San Miguel. We suggest you take a flight to Leon Airport. It is the most used for people travelling to San Miguel since it is only an hour’s drive from the San Miguel city centre. For travellers flying in from the US or Canada cheap flights are available to Mexico City and so it might make more sense for North Americans to fly to Mexico and take public transport thereon. For European travellers, it might be more convenient to take a flight to Barcelona. Flight options from Barcelona to Leon are available with Iberia Regional.
